Musicians earn the call back by being the person an artist never has to worry about: prepared before the session, consistent on every date, honest about what they can deliver, and protective of the artist’s vision. Talent opens the door. Trust is what keeps you in the room. It is the heart of my book, Trusted by Legends, and of the conversation I had with students at Full Sail University on October 27, 2026.
The talk was live from Full Sail’s Orlando Health Fortress and streamed on YouTube. You can watch the replay on my Trusted by Legends at Full Sail page.
The Habits That Get You Hired Again
I have spent my career around artists who can hire anyone, including Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne and KISS. Our IDA team has worked on dozens of gold and platinum albums with artists such as The Rolling Stones, Ringo Starr, Elton John, Sting, Journey, Shakira and Cher. The people those artists keep calling share a few habits:
- They arrive prepared. The songs are learned, the gear works, the charts are ready. Preparation is the most visible form of respect.
- They are the same every time. Consistency on the first night and the fiftieth is what lets an artist stop thinking about you and focus on the music.
- They say yes only when they can deliver. Overpromising once costs more than turning down a job.
- They protect the artist’s vision. Ideas are welcome. Ego is not. The best collaborators make the artist sound more like themselves.
- They keep confidences. What happens in the studio, on the bus and in the meeting stays there. Discretion builds careers quietly.
Trust Works the Same Way for Artists
The same habits apply when you are the artist. Labels, managers, agents and promoters invest in artists they can rely on: the ones who show up ready, deliver what they promised and treat their team well. In artist development we work on the music, the live show and the business together, and reliability runs through all of it. It is often the quality that separates two equally talented artists when a label is deciding where to invest.
For Full Sail Students
You are learning the technical side of this business at one of the best places to learn it. Treat every class project, internship and first session as the start of your reputation, because the people next to you today are the ones who will hire you later. If you want more on how artists build careers, read how to make it in the music industry and what an artist development consultant does.
